Roger Sydney Clarke, 91, of Central City, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Mercy in Iowa City, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 2, 2024, at The United Church of Christ in Central City. Memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at the church. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Roger was born on July 14, 1932, in Morley, Iowa, the son of Sydney Chailens and Gladys (Keagle) Clarke. He graduated from McKinley High School and went on to serve honorably in the Unites States Army during the Korean Conflict. On September 7, 2008, Roger was united in marriage to Susan Kaye Soukup in Central City. He was a traffic manager for CRANDIC Rail for over 30 years and was a lifelong farmer. Roger was the President of Chamber of Commerce, on the Goodwill Board, the United Way Board, and a member of the American Legion Post #421. He taught Sunday School for years and learned to play piano by ear. Roger will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Roger is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Susan Clarke; sons, Steven Clarke, Jeffrey Clarke, and Richard (Cheryl) Clarke; stepchildren, Aimee Vogeler, and Joshua (Jenn) VanAmerongen; grandchildren, Brenda (Steven) Welter, Laura Clarke (Jesse Eschen), and Steven Clarke; step grandchildren, Tristin Vogeler, Madison (Michael) Wade, Chase VanAmerongen, Gracie VanAmerongen, Willow VanAmerongen, Cheree, and Angela (Michael) Wiltsey; great-grandchildren, Emmett, and Elias; step great-grandchildren, Oliver, Wyatt, Isabelle, Allison, Abigail, and Bryce; sister, Beverly (Phillip) Leibold; and in-laws, Ed Kuba, Terry Fox, Shirley Hadad, and Leroy and Virginia Soukup.
He was preceded in death by his parents; spouse of 50 years, Lois Clarke; brothers, Ernest (Shirley) Clarke, and Loren Clarke; stepson, David Vogeler; and step great-granddaughter, Casey Ashen-Cox.
