Dr. Shetterly was born in Dayton, Ohio on December 14, 1940. He attended Fairview High School, where he played football and served as his senior class president before graduating with honors from Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. He loved spending time with his fellow Phi Delta brothers and rooting on Northwestern’s Wildcats through many losses and a few notable wins. A love for his home state brought him back to Ohio where he attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. In 1968 and 1969, he dutifully served our country as a General Medical Officer and Lieutenant Commander (USN) at the Naval Hospital in Danang, South Vietnam where he was responsible for initial casualty resuscitation and triage, ICU, surgery assistance, and post-operative care. In the early 1970s, Dr. Shetterly returned to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine for his residency and was awarded Outstanding Resident upon graduation. Dr. Shetterly started his private ophthalmology practice in Hendersonville, NC in 1974, treating patients for nearly thirty years. During that time, he was Chairman of the Executive Committee and Chief of Surgery at Pardee Hospital, Director and Founder of the Eye Program at the Free Clinic of Hendersonville County, Board member of Women Helping Women, and President of the Henderson County Medical Society. He also was a member of the North Carolina Medical Society and Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Shetterly loved spending time with his family, sailing, playing clarinet for the local community band, writing, riding his motorcycle, golfing, taking his standard poodle Jake for walks, and spending time with friends. His intellectual curiosity kindled his interest in reading and history and led to his enjoyment of traveling across the U.S. and through many foreign countries.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Free Clinic of Hendersonville County https://www.thefreeclinics.org/donate/ or to the Children of the Fallen Patriots Foundation https://www.fallenpatriots.org/#home in the name of Dr. Roger Shetterly.
