Rodney L. Smith, 87, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2024, at his home. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at the at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, with burial to follow at Saint John Cemetery in Newhall, Iowa.

Rodney was born on September 18, 1936, in Keystone, Iowa, the son of Llewellyn and Helen Marie (Sadler) Smith. He was a 1954 graduate of Keystone High School and went on to attend Iowa State University. On October 14, 1956, Rodney was united in marriage to Glennys Ann Wendel. He worked for Rockwell Collins until his retirement in 1992 at the age of 56. Rodney was a member of Waltonian Archers of Linn County and a part of a bowling league. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in Minnesota, gardening, and canning tomatoes for homemade salsa. His tomato plants were taller than him every year. Rodney was quite the artist, he loved to draw pictures of cartoon characters, his family, and anything else that would cheer someone up that needed to be lifted. He will be remembered for doing anything for anyone with an open heart, especially family. Rodney will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Rodney is survived and lovingly remembered by his four children, Kathleen (Leo) Petersen, Cynthia (fiancé Rick) Kriegermeier, Allan (Shirley) Smith, and Judith Urbanek; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many others who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Glennys; brother, Delbert Smith; and sister, Carol Jean Smith.
