Rod Osborne O’Brien

Van Horne

Rod Osborne O’Brien, 52, passed away on Monday, May 6, 2024, in Van Horne, IA.

The youngest of three siblings, he was born on March 1, 1972, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Daniel and Mary O’Brien. He proudly graduated in 1990 from Benton Community High School and in 1994 from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, with a Professional Golf Management degree.

Rod’s passion for golf began at a young age when he was introduced to the sport by his father. He demonstrated a lifetime of excellent play, enjoyed many courses, and built tremendous friendships through his love of the sport. He was a constant winner on the Tara Hills Golf Course ranging from friend’s quarter bets to the club championships.

He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Chargers. He would travel miles, sometimes internationally, to see a Widespread Panic or Grateful Dead concert.

His face was familiar as a friendly bartender and excellent chef at many bars and restaurants. For many years, Rod was primary caretaker for his mother, Mary Dinka. Occasionally, he would treat his family and closest friends to a dinner party of her famous Best. Tacos. Ever! or his scrumptious pan-seared beef tenderloin.

Rod’s infectious laugh and friendly, caring, outgoing personality helped create a core group of friends that loved him throughout his life. If Rod knew you, he likely had a nickname for you that he would joyously greet you with each time he saw you. We hope that when you think of that nickname or of Rod that you find comfort in knowing that he is at peace.

Rod is survived by his loving sister, Eva Bartelt, her children Victoria Hunt (Spencer) and Vance, and her grandchild, Rosemary Hunt; his best friend and brother John (April Melsa), his children Marlee Graeser (Matt), Javen, Olivia Graveman, and his grandchildren James, Jaxton, Hattyn Graesser; his aunts Dolores Johnson and Therese O’Brien, as well as many cousins and friends who loved him dearly.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Mary O’Brien and his crazy animal dog, Charger.

A Celebration of Life will occur on Friday, July 19, 2024, beginning at 3:00 PM, at his second home, Tara Hills Golf Course, Van Horne, Iowa.

Expressions of sympathy can be sent to: “The Family of Rod O’Brien” at Phillips Funeral Homes, PO Box 307, Vinton, Iowa 52349.
