Roberta Meyers Bennum

Roberta Meyers Bennum passed away at age 97 on Friday, August 20, 2021, in Hendersonville, North Carolina.  Born in Syracuse, New York in 1924, daughter of Herbert and Margaret Meyers, she was a very bright and athletic student.  She was a US Navy WAVE Aerographers Mate from May 1945 to June 1946.  She married George C. Bennum in June 1947 and remained happily married until his death in 2004.

Roberta earned a Bachelor of Science and Master’s Degree in Public Health Nutrition from Syracuse University and worked as a nutritionist for health care organizations in the upstate New York area.

Roberta loved hiking and camping with her husband, family, and friends, and loved competing in many sports including skiing, ping pong, badminton, tennis, horseshoes, and bridge.  She always excelled at athletic and intellectual competitions.  She was a finalist in the Syracuse City Tennis Championship as a teenager.  She loved dogs and would always stop and talk to a friendly canine.

Roberta is remembered in her later years for her continued independence and energy, remaining alert and active until her death.  Her perseverance in the face of severe vision loss, hearing loss, and the restrictions of Covid-19 was remarkable.

She is predeceased by her husband George C. Bennum and siblings Norma McGowan, Margaret McGowan, and Herbert Meyers.  She is survived by her son Dr. Richard Bennum (Nancy) and grandsons George Bennum (Carrie Alexander) and Russell Bennum and great-granddaughter Esther Bella Bennum.

There will be a private family service at a later date.
