Robert John Hoffman

Cedar Rapids

On Dec. 11, 2022, Robert John Hoffman was surrounded by his family at home, as his last journey around the sun came to an end. One of Bob’s favorite’s quotes from Jimmy Buffet is “Some of it’s magic and some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all the way.”

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Luncheon to follow at the church.

Robert John Hoffman was born on Oct. 3, 1948, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, son of John and Dorothy Hoffman. Bob was united in marriage to Kathie King-Hoffman on Aug. 6, 1987. He was a loving husband, great-grandfather, grandfather, father, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, friend and loved by so many others.

Bob graduated from LaSalle High School and received the DECA award for being the first student to be bused to a public school to take classes. He worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for several years and then shifted gears to work in roofing, where he began as a laborer and advanced into a management role, which he enjoyed. His next role was at the Cedar Rapids Country Club where he was known as “Bob the Valet.” He enjoyed wearing different hats for the holidays and handing out suckers to the children. Bob was previously on the Board of Directors at Dupaco Community Credit Union and previous President of VFW Men’s Auxiliary.

Bob was an avid gardener, whether it was flowers or vegetables, they grew abundantly under his care. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes, music, art, photography, camping, fishing and his wandering soul took him on many traveling adventures. Bob loved spending time with his family at extended family get-togethers, and spending time with his special friends, Mike and Mark. He was a role model for his family and will be greatly missed.

Bob is survived by his daughters, Melanie Hoffman, Kellie Hoffman and Ann Offermann (Boyd Brown); grandchildren, Amanda (Nick) Nugent, Joey (Lillie) Hoffman, Oliver, Elliot, Amelia Offerman-Brown, Brooklynn and Dylan Gatewood; great-grandson, Caleb Nugent; and siblings, Richard “Dick” (Kathy) Hoffman, Sally Hoffman, Ronald “Ron” (Barb) Hoffman, Jean (Stephen) Becker, Linda (John) Elliff, Laureen (Damon) Hauptmann and Janet (AR) Carbonell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathie King-Hoffman; parents, John and Dorothy Hoffman; sister, Mary Kay Hoffman-Boston; brother, Baby John Hoffman; son, Jamie Hoffman; and special friend, Steve.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a memorial bench to be placed in Utah in Bob’s honor.
