Robert  Charleston, Sr.

Robert Lewis Charleston, son of the late Horace Charleston and Annie Bell Charleston Baker, born in Rowan County on January 4, 1940, departed this life Friday, January 8, 2021 at South Point Hospital (Cleveland Clinic) in Warrensville Heights, Ohio.

At an early age, he joined White Rock AME Zion Church. He attended the public schools in Rowan County and was a 1959 graduate of Dunbar High School, East Spencer, NC. He continued his education at Erma Lee’s Barber College in Cleveland, Ohio. He was an entrepreneur and owned Charleston’s Barber Shop retiring in 2010.

Robert was preceded in death by his first wife Faye Charleston and second wife, Patsy Elaine Warner-Charleston; his parents; step-father, Troy Baker; brothers, Josiah Charleston, Sr., Hoyt Baker and sister, Geraldine Alexander. Robert was a loving, caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He enjoyed telling fond stories of times gone by. While his mortal life has ended, he continues to live on in the memory and hearts of his family and friends.

He leaves to cherish those memories: two sons, Robert (Vanessa) Charleston Jr. of Bedford Heights, Ohio and Clearance Alvin (Kim) Charleston of Bedford, Ohio; one daughter, Nikai Charleston of Twinsburg, Ohio; a brother, Troy (Hilda) Baker of Raleigh, NC; four sisters, Kathleen Corpening of Granite Quarry, NC; Leenora Smith, Thedora (James) Speed of Raleigh, NC; Angela Baker of Garner, NC; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two aunts and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
