Richard S. Nelson, 91, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2024. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Friday, January 26, 2024. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at King of Kings Lutheran Church, located at 3275 N Center Point Road. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. A visitation will begin at 9:30 AM at the church.

He was born on October 23, 1932, son of Ruben and June (Hines) Nelson, in Clayton County, and later moved to Cedar Rapids in 1947. He graduated from Franklin High School in June of 1951. On March 4, 1952, Richard enlisted in the US Navy, and served on the USS Toledo during the Korean War until February 27, 1956. Richard married his wife Shirley Ann Johanningmeier, on September 1, 1956, at Elkport Lutheran Church. Richard was a welder at Universal Engineering and was crowned King of the Allied Industrial League in 1958. November 1, 1961, he joined the Cedar Rapids Police Department and retired July 25, 1986.

Richard was a life-time member of VFW Post 788, American Legion Post 298. He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Police Association, Iowa State Police Association, the Associates of the Police, and King of Kings Lutheran Church. He attended the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight on October 3, 2017.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marilyn (Nelson) Michael.

Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-seven years, Shirley; sons, Richard (Darla), and Kevin (Deena); grandchildren, Adam (Wendy) Nelson, Heather (Nate) Updegraff, Aaron (Augusta) Nelson, and Brandon Nelson; great-grandchildren, Emerson, Sophia, Madison, Gracie, and Maverick, Mia, Miley, and Maci.

The family would like to thank everyone for the support and care given to him.
