Retta Belle Fisher

Retta Belle Fisher, 96, of Mansfield, passed away Monday evening, January 3, 2022, at her home.

She was born June 20, 1925, in Hacker Valley, West Virginia, to the late Ida May (Carpenter) and Steven Simmons. Retta retired after 25 years from Neisner’s Five and Dime Store where she was manager of the lunch counter. She then worked at Roseland Elementary School in the cafeteria for several years. Retta enjoyed gardening-both flowers and vegetables. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed making quilts for her family. Another favorite activity was spoiling them with her wonderful baked goods.

Retta is survived by a daughter, Brenda (Don) Surber; two grandchildren, Joe Surber and Denise (Carlos) Diaz; three great-granddaughters, Taylor Surber, Sidney Surber and Rylee Diaz; a sister-in-law, Loretta Simmons; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest G. Fisher; four brothers, Arlie Simmons, Dempsey Simmons, Roy Simmons and Eugene Simmons; and a sister, Thelma Anderson.

The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 7, 2022, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. The funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Rick Utt officiating. She will be laid to rest in Mansfield Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Avita Home Health and Hospice.
