A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City.

Graveside services with military honors will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at the Phelps Cemetery in Decorah, Iowa.

Raymond and Carole were united in marriage for 48 years and were united in death by less than one day. Raymond died at University of Iowa Hospital Aug. 27. Carole died at Brown Deer Place Assisted Living Aug. 28.

Raymond graduated from Winona State University with a BSN, and then went on to specialize and worked until his retirement as a nurse anesthetist at VA Hospital in Iowa City. He served in the U.S. Army and in the Coast Guard Reserves.

Carole grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and received her nursing degree from the University of Cincinnati. Carole worked at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City until her retirement.

Raymond is survived by his sister, Janet Alfonso of Jefferson, M.D.; his nephew, Joe Alfonso (Tasha) of East Setauket, N.Y.; and his niece, Angela Alfonso (Matt Stratton) of Frederick, M.D. He is further survived by extended family in the Decorah, Iowa area.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dr. Arden Hegtvedt.

Carole is survived by her brother, Dan Bartholomew (Pam) of Loveland, Ohio; a niece, Jill Kozarev (Ivan), and their son, Nikolas of Columbus, Ohio. She is survived by extended family in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Carole was preceded in death by her parents.

A special thank-you to Carole’s friend Jan Stock for her care and support during Carole’s illness. Thank you to Raymond’s fishing buddy, John Gillenwater who was there for Ray during his recent health decline. And thank you to St. Croix Hospice for their coordination and transition of care for Carole and Raymond to Brown Deer Place.
