Patrick L. McNelley
- April 13, 2021
Patrick L. McNelley, age 70, of Kenilworth passed away suddenly Saturday, April 10, 2021, surrounded by his adoring family. Son of the late Thomas and Audrey. Beloved husband of Linda, nee Wells, for nearly 50 wonderful years. Treasured father of Jennifer (Tom) Dine, Steven (Julie) McNelley, and Katherine M. Mortell. Fun-loving grandfather (Poppy) of Patrick, Molly, and Annie Dine, Colin, Brendan, and Logan McNelley, and Lucy Mortell. Dear brother of Michael. Loyal friend and cousin to many.
Pat was born and raised in the Edgebrook neighborhood of Chicago, attended St. Mary of the Woods, Notre Dame College Prep, and Western Illinois University. He moved his family to Kenilworth, IL in 1984 and was actively involved in the community as both a baseball and basketball commissioner and a coach for many years. Additionally, he enjoyed writing dozens of parody songs for the local school variety show.
Gifted with an innate sense of humor, comedy writing was Pat’s passion. He began writing situational comedy scripts after attending The Second City Workshop. One of his proudest accomplishments was the inclusion of his storylines in the HBO hit series, Curb Your Enthusiasm. Two of his most prominent contributions, “The Table Read” and the Bill Buckner portion of “Mr. Softee,” appear in Seasons 7 and 8. The “Mister Softee” episode was eventually ranked #8 on “Time Magazine’s Top Ten List” of television episodes for 2011. Writing and music brought him immense joy, and were the essence of who he was.
Pat took a sincere interest in people, building connections wherever he went. Always seeing the good in others, he epitomized positivity. His family was his top priority, and his children and grandchildren were the light of his life. He never missed a game, recital, meet, concert, play, or parent-teacher conference. He, his sense of humor, and many talents will be dearly missed.
A Memorial Visitation will take place on Friday, April 16, 2021, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Saints Faith, Hope & Charity Church, 191 Linden Street, Winnetka, IL. Funeral services will be held privately at a later date. In the spirit of Pat’s kindness and in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity that is close to your heart.
