Norma Jane Schweitzer Browning-Gordon

Norma Jane Schweitzer Browning-Gordon, age 89, of Venice FL, formerly of Springfield, IL, passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2020. Norma was born at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, IL, on November 3, 1931, the daughter of Donald Franklin Schweitzer and Helen Jeannette Bauserman Schweitzer. Her father was called home on January 9, 1976 and her mother on November 29, 2005. Norma was married at Grace Lutheran Church on July 5, 1952 to Charles Lynn Browning of Decatur/Springfield. “Chuck” was called home on July 4, 2007, one day short of their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary. On December 14, 2008 Norma married Roger B. Gordon of Council Bluffs, Iowa/Springfield. He was called home on December 18, 2017.

Surviving are one son, Randall D. Browning (wife Beth) of Springfield; one daughter, Sandra Lynn Browning (partner Pam) of Nokomis, Florida; one step-daughter, Stacy McGuire (husband Cliff) of DesMoines, Iowa; three step-sons, Kent Gordon (wife Sonja) of Buffalo Grove, IL, Kevin Gordon (wife Nancy) of Omaha, NE, and Greg Gordon (wife Tami) of Council Bluffs, IA; two granddaughters, Jennifer Hoerner (husband Michael), and Julia Browning (husband Greg Dawson), both of Springfield, IL; one great-grandson, Nathan Hoerner, of Springfield; one sister, Eleanor Jean Sakris (husband Charles, deceased) of Springfield; Roger’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a lot of good friends. Norma truly treasured all of her family and friends.

Following her graduation from Springfield High School in 1950, Norma worked for National Life Insurance Co. and Illinois Education Assoc. She was then employed for twenty-nine years by School District #186, primarily at Springfield High School, her alma mater, retiring in June of 1990. Following her retirement, she was employed by Sangamon County Schools Credit Union, now known as Illinois Educators Credit Union. After her move to Florida in 2016, she became an Associate Member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Nokomis. She was a life-time member of Springfield’s Historic Grace Lutheran Church. She sang in the choir, and attended faith/ grace Circle and Bible Study. She was a Sunday School teacher, a past Director of the Junior Choir, volunteered in the Grace business office and Grace Food Pantry, served as Prayer Chain Coordinator, was a member and past leader of Ruth Circle, and was a past member of the Grace Congregational Council, at one time serving as Secretary and a member of the Trust Committee.

Services and internment at Camp Butler National Cemetery will likely be scheduled in May/June, 2021, pending the ability to safely gather and celebrate Norma’s life, given the current pandemic.
