Matthew M. “Matt” Marx, 69, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, March 3, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with the visitation to begin one hour prior. Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids at a later date.

Matt was born Sept. 28, 1953, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Robert and Adeline (Landgren) Marx. He graduated from Washington High School in 1971. Matt served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy as a constructionman build striker. After serving in the Navy, Matt returned to his hometown of Cedar Rapids with his former wife, Becky McCright. Matt made a life for himself, had the privilege of being father to three wonderful children (Corey, Riley, and McCaela), and was a steady influence to Rosie, who he treated as one of his own children.

Matt started his career as a millwright with Square D in 1971, where he remained for 45 years. He was a member of the Machinist Local 831. Matt enjoyed his time at Bushwood, where he would connect with his retired friends to share stories over breakfast. In Matt’s free time he enjoyed the outdoors, music, drinking craft beer, joining his family for racing and holding great conversations. He could also be counted on to fix anything and to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

All of Matt’s passions are what would connect him with his wife, Kay. On Jan. 8, 2023, after over a decade building a life together, Matt and Kay Siela were united in marriage. Matt was devoted to his family and grandchildren, and to all those who crossed his path. He loved spending time with his dogs, Big Al and Gladys, and taking them for rides. The memories of Matt will be treasured by all those who knew him, and he will be dearly missed for all of time.

Survivors include his wife, Kay of Cedar Rapids; his children, Corey Marx of Cedar Rapids, Riley (Adam) Marx Burns of North Carolina, McCaela Marx (fiance, Ashton Wilkins) of Cedar Rapids; Kay’s children, Zak (Diana) Siela of Cedar Falls, Noah (Cass) Siela of Columbia, Mo., Frances (Kyle) Moehnke, Abe (Jamie) Siela and John Siela, all of Cedar Rapids.

Also surviving are Matt’s grandchildren, Ilyana, Cruze, Jacobi, Toni, Jaelyn, Reed, Alli, Sadie, Maury, Orlando and Olivia; his siblings, Suzanne (Mick) Jameson, Jolene Jones and Jan (James) Primmer, all of Cedar Rapids; niece, Krysta; and nephews, Dillon, Matthew and Jeramy.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Justin Jones.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a fund that has been established for Matt’s favorite charities.
