Mary “Mary Jo” Streb, 88, of Iowa City, died on March 27, 2023, at Oaknoll Retirement Community.
Memorial Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Iowa City. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made directed towards St. Patrick Catholic Church or The Loft at The Oaknoll Foundation.
Mary Jo was born to George and Gladys (McBride) Holaday Nov. 24, 1934, in Cass County, Iowa. A 1952 graduate of Massena High School in Massena, Iowa. Mary Jo embarked on a new adventure taking her off the family farm and to the University of Iowa, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1956. She wasted no time and married the man of her dreams, Al Streb Feb. 9, 1957. Together, they had nine children and built a life full of noise, chaos at times and of course numerous loving memories.
Mary Jo was a licensed Realtor in Iowa City for over 25 years and co-owned multiple businesses, construction and land developments. When Mary Jo was not seen running around town for work you could catch her and her children’s countless activities. Mary Jo was always on the go and enjoyed meeting and working with so many people in the Iowa City area.
Mary Jo handed down her love for planting flowers in the Spring to many of her kids, enjoyed walks in the evening when time permitted, love of current events, politics and cheering on the Hawkeyes.
Mary Jo is survived by her children, Alene (Chad) Singleton, Citrus Heights, Calif., David (Mindi) Streb, Iowa City, Karen Streb, Venice, Fla., Kathryn Streb, Ankeny, Iowa, Michael (Lori) Streb, Iowa City, Janice (Lamont) Perkins, Coralville, Steven (Joanna) Streb, North Liberty, Iowa, and Michelle (Terry) Alberts, North Liberty, Iowa; 17 grandchildren, Maureen Nevin, Kelly (Todd) Ackerman, Jeff (Rachel) Nevin, Steve Nevin, Ashley Streb, Courtney Streb, Stacy (Brad) Schmitz, Matt Streb, Danielle Chelf, Megan (Burke) Paddock, Kaitlyn Chelf, Karisa (Jason) Mellinger, Jack Streb, Geoff Streb, Emily Streb, Delaney Alberts and Shane Alberts; and10 great-grandchildren; Ashton, Kyra, Riley, Jackson, Hunter, Maxton, Blair, Ridge, Laikyn and Callie.
Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Helen and Marilyn; husband, Al; son, Patrick; son-in-law, Dan Chelf; and great-grandson, Carson Schmitz.
The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the many people at Oaknoll Retirement Community. We are so appreciative she had so many wonderful people assisting her in her final years.
