Mary Darlene Kobs was born Oct. 14, 1932, to Edward Berthold Kobs and Marie Magdeline (Liedermann) Kobs in Burlington, Iowa. Minutes later her twin brother, Donald Paul “Butch” Kobs was born. Graveside service: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at Oak Shade Cemetery.

Mary was born fifth in the Kobs family of seven children; Edward, Robert, Ruth, Dorothy and Butch, who have all preceded her in death. She is survived by her youngest brother, James.

Mary’s parents farmed in southern Iowa and her dad worked at the steel mill. Mary attended a one-room country school. In 1959, she married Ralph O’Neill and they settled in Marion, Iowa. All six of their children; Laura, Diane (Harv), Steve, Theresa, Tom, and Danny, were born and raised in Marion. Mary’s life was devoted to her family. She worked tirelessly to ensure her family had everything they needed. Mary’s family grew with the addition of twelve grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Mary rarely ever complained, was very generous, and had a wonderful sense of humor even in difficult times.

Special thanks to Hospice of Mercy for their assistance in caring for Mary during her last days.
