Marvel Ann Foens, 78, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Tipton, Iowa, passed away on Dec. 10, 2022, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In agreement with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Marvel’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, where the family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the service time. A private committal service will take place at a later date at the Masonic Cemetery in Tipton.
Marvel was born on May 4, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Frank Leo and Vera Mae (Wagaman) Kellerhals. She was a 1962 graduate of Tipton Community High School. On Sept. 22, 1963, Marvel was united in marriage to Richard “Rich” James Foens in Bennett, Iowa. She had worked for several years at Dairy Queen in Tipton. She also worked at Hancock Fabric Store and volunteered many hours at Emerson Elementary. Together, Marvel and Rich owned and operated Tipton Shoe Repair in Tipton, later Smitty’s Shoe Repair in Marion. Marvel was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting. Marvel taught her granddaughter how to sew. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Marvel is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of 59 years, Rich Foens of Marion; son, Scott (Linda) Foens of Marion; daughter, Lori (Craig) Barenz of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Nikolas Foens, Sydnei Foens, and Fayde Foens of Marion, Morgan Barenz and Dylan Barenz of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Lee Kellerhals of Marion; two sisters, Betty Lou Arenz and Emmy Nolte of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Larry “Whitey” Kellerhals and Donald Kellerhals.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Marvel’s memory may be made to either the Tipton Ambulance or to St. Luke’s Nursing Scholarship.
