Marie Anderson Smith

Marie Anderson Smith, 86, of Hendersonville, NC was called home to Heaven on the morning of June 2, 2022. Affectionately known as Marie, Mom, Grandma, and Aunt Marie, she was born on April 25, 1936 in Henderson County, NC. She was the eleventh of fourteen close-knit siblings born to Fred Avery Anderson and Bertie Jarvis Anderson. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Helen Smith, Carroll Anderson, Leola Alexander, Juanita Westmoreland, Vaughn Anderson, JC Anderson, Charles Anderson, Jeanette Fortune, Guy Anderson, Barbara Bivens and survived by her sisters Inez Lyday, Ruby Gilbert, and Doris Anderson. Marie is also survived by her two daughters, Donna Overcash (Edward) and Sondra Smith (Vincent); grandchildren Sheena Gabbard (Steven) and Jeff Overcash (Amy); great grandsons whom she loved dearly, Grant and Beau Gabbard, and Gabriel and Caden Overcash; and several nieces and nephews who cherished Marie’s humor and energy and who will miss her greatly.

Marie was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church. She loved her church family and was encouraged by them weekly. She loved gospel music and old church hymns and had all of her favorites memorized.

She was the life of the party and a go-getter. If the music had a good beat she was ready to get up and dance. She enjoyed life to the fullest and worked hard. Golf, fishing, card games, music and just being around people in general kept her active and healthy. Most days she could be found walking around her community checking in on neighbors and friends. She loved connecting with people.

She owned and operated several successful restaurants in the surrounding area over the course of her lifetime. Some of the best memories of her may be from J&J Restaurant in Hendersonville or Chimney Rock View Restaurant in Chimney Rock. She was an amazing cook and passed on her skills and love of cooking to both of her daughters.

She could never pass up a game of cards, Canasta, Rummy, or Phase Ten. The majority of the time, she won.

Marie was most proud of her family. Spending time with them was the highlight of her day; lunch, shopping, it really didn’t matter as long as they were together. She was always ready to celebrate the successes of friends and family and couldn’t wait to share any exciting news with others. She was proud of and protective of “her people.”

The family will receive friends and family at the residence of Edward & Donna Overcash, 2915 Sugarloaf Mountain Road, Hendersonville, on Saturday, June 4th from 4:00-7:00pm.

A funeral service will be held at Gethsemane Baptist Church on Sunday, June 5th at 3:00pm. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 2:00-2:45pm. A committal will be held at a later date.
