Loraine Mary Bomkamp, 92, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022, at The Woodlands at Meth-Wick Community. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2023, at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Dennis Miller. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family after 9:30 a.m. at the church. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.

Loraine was born in Cedar Rapids on July 9, 1930, to Frank W. and Kathryn (Seifert) Bomkamp. She attended Clarke College in Dubuque, graduated from Mount Mercy Junior College, and received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Iowa. She was a secretary in Personnel at Century Engineering Corporation. Loraine taught at the Wausau Technical Institute in Wisconsin and at Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids.

Throughout her lifetime, Loraine received several awards including the Certified Professional Secretary Award conferred by the Institute for Certifying Secretaries, the Mount Mercy College Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Cedar Rapids Civic Group Women’s Equality Award. She is listed in Who’s Who of Women in the Midwest, Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who of Women in the World and others. She belonged to several organizations including the American Association of University Women, the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of Key Women Educators, Epsilon State, Theta Chapter, where she was a past president, Iowa Retired School Personnel, Mercy Auxiliary, National Catholic Society of Foresters, University of Iowa Alumni Association and was a past member of several religious and community organizations. Loraine was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.

Loraine is survived by her sister-in-law, Evelyn Bomkamp; three nieces, Lisa Anderson, Dana Bomkamp and Kathryn Bomkamp; two nephews, Brad (Victoria) Bomkamp and Christopher (Susan) Bomkamp; several great-nieces and -nephews; and great-great nieces.

Loraine was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Dr. Daryl Bomkamp and Dr. Donald Bomkamp; and her nephew, David Bomkamp.

Loraine enjoyed genealogy research, traveling and music. She once commented as she approached the end of her life how fondly she remembered all the good relatives and friends who shared life’s journey with her.

Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
