Layo N. Flick

Layo Neil Flick, 95, died peacefully on November 16, 2022 at American House in Spring Lake, Michigan. His smile, his stories, and his love for his family, as well as a good laugh and tinkering embodied his life.

Born June 6, 1927 to Layo and (Florence) Elsa Staff on their farm outside of Barry, Illinois, Layo attended Barry, Illinois schools and graduated from the University of Illinois. There he met his future wife Mary (Hauber) Flick. After graduating in 1951, Layo spent two years completing his Army ROTC service with active duty as a Lieutenant in the 8th Army Quartermaster Corps during the Korea Conflict. After his discharge from the Army, he married Mary Flick on July 26, 1953 and moved to Barry, Illinois to farm with his father. Layo and Mary then spent the rest of their 57 years of married life in Jacksonville, Illinois where they raised their three daughters.

Layo was a District Sales Manager for several seed corn companies for a total of 42 years. Layo and Mary enjoyed their retirement years, visiting family and traveling. He made Naperville his home in 2011 where he enjoyed participating in activities in his retirement community.

Layo was husband to Mary, father to Anne (Steve) Poznic, Estes Park, CO, Nancy (Bruce) Cook, Spring Lake, Michigan and Mary Kay Flick, Cary, North Carolina; grandfather to Gregory (Elise) Poznic, Downers Grove, IL, Benjamin Poznic, Asheville, North Carolina, Jamie (Mike) Loizzo, Gainesville, Florida, Andrew (Samantha) Cook, Orland Park, Illinois, and Timothy Cook, Arlington, Virginia; great-grandfather to Allison, Claire and Anthony Loizzo, Gainesville, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Layo and Elsa Flick and his wife, Mary Flick.

There will be a celebration of Layo’s life at Staab Funeral Home, 1109 South 5th Street, Springfield, Illinois on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at 3:00 pm with visitation being held from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. A private internment ceremony will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery on Monday, December 12, 2022.
