Cedar Rapids

We are sad to announce the passing of Kevin Leroy Squires, age 64, of Cedar Rapids, IA. Kevin died in his home of a heart attack, on April 25, 2024.

Born on March 15, 1960, in Kirksville, MO, he was a graduate of Benton Community High School, Van Horne, Iowa, class of 1979. Kevin was a proud military Army veteran, he served in the tank division at Fort Campbell, KY. He continued his service stationed in Frankfurt, West Germany. Following his military service, he attended Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA. Kevin was happiest when he was working at the Cedar Rapids Public Library. He was an avid reader; Kevin always had a book with him.

Kevin was always ready for traveling and adventures. He loved family camping trips to Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain National Parks. He attended a Rodeo in Jackson Hole, WY. He viewed Mount Rushmore and the Grand Canyon. Kevin rode in our station wagon through the Chandelier Redwood tree in Redwood National Forest. Kevin had many fond memories of family vacations at Fort Myers Beach, Florida. He went on an airboat ride in the Florida Everglades. He enjoyed water skiing at Dubuque and snow skiing in Colorado. Kevin had lots of fun exploring Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, and Fisherman’s Wharf in California. Kevin looked forward to a yearly trek to the Iowa State Fair. He was so thankful for all the wonderful family vacations we had together.

Kevin was blessed with many friends. He enjoyed getting together with his friends, especially for barbecues and ball game nights. Kevin was a loyal Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and Minnesota Vikings fan. Also, Kevin and his friends enjoyed going to Hawkeye Downs Speedway to watch stock car races. Kevin’s favorite hobby was collecting remote-controlled cars. He and his friends would frequently get together at the park to drive their remote-control cars. They would also take road trips together to Lake Okoboji and ride the roller coasters at Arnolds Park. Kevin also liked to work out and go swimming at the YMCA. He took advantage of the many Linn County bike and hike trails for bike rides.

Kevin was a loving son, uncle, and brother. Every summer, Kevin would look forward to riding along with dad in his 1946 restored Willys Army Jeep in local parades celebrating hometown festivals in Benton community. He traveled often to visit his father, sisters, and their families in Texas. Kevin liked to spend evenings together playing cards and dominoes. Kevin looked forward to mini trips to Mexico and to the beach at South Padre Island.

He was faithful and attended Mass at St. Ludmila Catholic Church. 2 Timothy 4:7 “I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.”

Kevin’s ever-loving heart, friendly smile, generous spirit, and larger-than-life personality will be greatly missed. He was much loved and will be forever in our hearts. Kevin is preceded in death by his mother, Norma Squires. He is survived by his father, Gene Squires, and sisters, Karla (John) Warren and Kristi (Shawn) Donald.

There will be a private memorial service with family in South Texas.
