Karen Helen (Altman) McCreedy, 86, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Ainsworth, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, at the Halcyon House in Washington.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Washington with Pastor Anthony DeVaughn officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Interment will take place at the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church. Karen was born Oct. 28, 1937, in Gilmore City, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob William and Mildred Mozell (Hoffman) Altman. Karen graduated from Humboldt High School in 1955 and later graduated from the Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in 1958. She met Wilfred L. McCreedy at Iowa State University and the couple was united in marriage on Oct. 12, 1958, at the United Methodist Church in Humboldt, Iowa.

Karen lived on the McCreedy Century Family Farm near Ainsworth from 1958 until 2014 when she moved to Halcyon House. She worked as a pork producer and farrowing house manager on the family farm until 1999. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women assisting with funeral dinners. She was formerly a member of the Washington County Republican Women, Washington County Pork Producers, Sacha Club, the Highland Social Club, and the Ainsworth Community Housing Board of Directors. She was very active on many boards with the National Pork Council and the Iowa Pork Producers where she served as the President, Vice President and Treasurer of the Women’s National Pork Council, and President, Vice President and Secretary of the Iowa Porkettes. She was a volunteer at the Washington County Fair, 4-H leader and was a 4-H County Committee member. Karen traveled to all 99 counties in Iowa, 48 of the United States, Washington D.C., and 33 countries. Her favorite place was Iowa. She enjoyed knitting stocking hats and prayer shawls and gave them away to schools and others. She also loved to read several hundred books a year in her later years.

She is survived by four children: Gary McCreedy of Ainsworth, Iowa; Dale McCreedy of Anamosa, Iowa; Jill (Tony) Hubbard of Denver, Colorado; and Nancy McCreedy of Washington, Iowa; two grandchildren, Colton (Mackenzie) Covington, and Garrett Covington; and one great-granddaughter, Parker Covington. She is also survived by her siblings, Mardell (Earl) Jacobson of Waseca, Minn.; Douglas (Karen) Altman of Ankeny, Iowa; Paul (Smitty) Altman of Green Acres, Fla.; David (Sandy) Altman of Coon Rapids, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband Wilfred in 2015.
