Dana Charles “Dan” Mehaffey, much-loved curmudgeon, died gently on Dec. 6, 2023. He was born Feb. 2, 1954, the youngest of four children of Chuck and Pat Mehaffey, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Dan was a caregiver at heart. When his dad retired, Dan quit his job in Florida and moved back to Iowa, in his words, “to take care of the property” (his parents’ retirement home on the Cedar River) so his dad wouldn’t have to. When Chuck fell and was injured, Dan took care of his dad’s every need for six years. Since then, he has been caring for his mother, Pat. Although he was a very private (though outspoken) person, his love for his “people” was obvious.

Dan is survived by his mother Pat, sister Robin (Clark), and brother Patrick (Lorri); nephews Mike Barnes, Devin Mehaffey, (Young) Dan Mehaffey, and (Young) Chuck Mehaffey; nieces Day Bobinchuck, Christy Maresh, and Erin McKeon. He was preceded in death by his father and brother Mike.

At his request, there will be no services.
