Juanita Marie (Angell) Hargrave, 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023, at home after an extended battle with ovarian cancer.

A visitation will be held at Phillips Funeral Home, 212 E. Sixth St. in Vinton, on Thursday, Feb. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton with Pastor Steven Preus officiating and a luncheon to follow at the church. A visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral services. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello, Iowa, on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. with a coffee celebration of life to follow at St. John’s Lutheran Church. A memorial fund has been established.

Juanita was born Sept. 6, 1942, in Monticello, Iowa, the daughter of Lou and Marie (Sundermeyer) Angell. In 1966, she was united in marriage to James Hargrave at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Delaware, Iowa.

She graduated from Earlville High School then attended and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in English Education. She began her teaching career in Monticello and shortly thereafter worked to complete her Masters of Library Science at the University of Iowa. She was an elementary librarian and English teacher for the Monticello Community School district for over 30 years.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran church in Monticello where she served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, and later a member of Trinity Lutheran church in Vinton, Iowa. After living in Monticello for over 40 years, she and Jim moved to Vinton to be closer to family. She enjoyed reading, golfing, playing bridge, and attending her grandchildren’s many activities.

She is survived by her husband, James; daughter, Heather Kalous (Travis); grandchildren, Hannah and Elijah Kalous; nephews, Tom Abele, Ken Pensel and Gary Pensel (Rita); nieces, Lisa Miltenberger (Mike) and Wendy Swan (Rick).

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Janet Pensel and brother-in-law, Wallace Pensel; sister-in-law, Linda Abele; and in-laws, Glenn and Naomi Hargrave.

The family would like to thank Dr. Goodheart, Dr. Nabi, Dr. Silbernagel and staff, the staff at Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, and the staff at Compassus Hospice Care. The care these professionals provided during her long fight will never be forgotten. We would also like to thank everyone who provided thoughts and prayers which helped strengthen and reinforce her unwavering faith in the promise of eternal life.
