Joseph Marcus McLaughlin Jr.

Joseph McLaughlin, of Flat Rock, NC, passed away April 5, 2022.  He was born to Joseph and Sara McLaughlin in Dallas, Texas on January 25th, 1943.  Survivors include son, Mark McLaughlin, wife Lori and their two children, Cameron and Evie; son Zachary McLaughlin; daughter, Jennifer McLaughlin Kunkel, husband Kent, and their children Jack, Breanna, and Matthew; sister Jan Sturdevant and Patty Simon.

As a child, he attended 20 different Texas schools, moving often as his father was employed by Mobil Oil Corporation in the company’s many west Texas oilfields.  Upon high school graduation, he chose to make a bigger move in his life by attending Notre Dame University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.  Following graduation from ND, he married his college sweetheart, Anne McNeil McLaughlin (deceased), obtained a Masters Degree in Industrial Management from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University, was immediately employed by Mobil Corporation (at that point he represented the 4th generation of McLaughlins to work for Mobil) and began raising a family of three children.

He had a 30-year career at Mobil, living in various locations including Chicago, Indianapolis, Boston, New York, Dallas and Washington D.C.  For 20 of those years, he progressed through 19 positions of responsibility, including financial analysis, credit, service station construction, marketing support, lubricant manufacturing and distribution, computer systems technology for 22 foreign affiliates, and culminating as General Manager, Corporate Purchasing, responsible for worldwide procurement.  For the other 10 years, he led a wide range of special projects and reorganization studies resulting in $1.5 billion in profit improvements.

Retiring from Mobil in 1996, he and his second wife, Pamela Ann Teerlink (deceased), relocated to the Hendersonville/Flat Rock, NC area to enjoy the Blue Ridge mountains and all that Western NC had to offer.  Joe was a loyal and avid follower of all things Notre Dame, enjoyed politics and following the stock market, and remained staunchly true to his religious beliefs and personal ethics throughout all of his business and personal dealings.  He adored his three children and five grandchildren, taking great pride in all their successes and was always there to support them during their disappointments.

A funeral mass will be held in his honor at the Immaculate Conception Church at 208 7th Ave. W, Hendersonville, NC on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 1:00 pm. A celebration of his life will be held at his home at 433 Summerfield Place, Flat Rock, NC beginning at 3:00 pm.
