John Richard Stirniman, 94, passed away Sunday, March 3, at Promise House Assisted Living in Hiawatha. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 7, 2024, at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. There will be a visitation prior, from 9:00-11:00 AM. Interment to follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

John was born on August 8, 1929, in Davis, California to Madge (Ryan) and Edward Stirniman. He spent most of his childhood in Germany and Australia before moving to Brooklyn, Iowa where he graduated high school in 1947. He served his country in the Army’s 39th Field Artillery in the Korean War. John returned from his service to marry his high school sweetheart, Margaret DeMeulenare in 1952, and continued at St. Ambrose University until graduating in 1955. Moving to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he was employed with an accounting firm, then later Souvenir Pen as comptroller. He later spent numerous years employed as a security guard at Rockwell Collins, retiring at the age of 87. John enjoyed volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America and several parish organizations at both St. Pius and St. Matthew Catholic Parishes.

John is survived by his wife of 71 years; five sons, Ed (Sue) of Fort Worth, TX, Tom (Steph) of Phoenix, AZ, Jim (Cheryl) of Des Plaines, IL, Paul (Deb) of Cortez, CO and Fr Jeff of Bloomington, IL; Three grandsons, Matt (Lety), Michael (Katrina), and Cole; Two great-granddaughters, Allie and Livi; Johns sister, Dr. Jane Stirniman; Sister in law, Marilyn DeMeulenare; along with many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents, brother Jim Stirniman and sister Ann Stirniman.

Memorials to be directed to St. Matthews Parish.
