John Manuel Hernandez, 75, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday, June 22, 2024, at his home. A visitation will be held from 9:30 – 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Inurnment: Center Point Cemetery, Center Point, Iowa. A livestream of the memorial service may be accessed on the funeral home website tribute page for John under “photos and videos or media,” starting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
John was born May 9, 1949, in Mexico City, Mexico, the son of Juan and Carmen (Gonzalez) Hernandez. He married Lynette Rae Boyles on May 17, 1975, in Cedar Rapids. John’s career spanned various roles, including positions at the Cedar Rapids Police Department, Rockwell Collins, and the City of Cedar Rapids Water Department until his retirement in 2010. He was a self-taught musician and played bass guitar in various rock bands for over 50 years. John was passionate about politics and a die-hard democrat.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Lynette Hernandez; daughters, Jennifer Davis and Christine Hernandez, both of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Desmond, Joseph, Alexander, Devin, Jaeda, Manny, Tianah, Tyrese, and Santana; siblings, Victor (Kenda) Hernandez, Patricia (Mike) Forbes, David (Tina) Hernandez, and Robert (Kim) Hernandez; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan Hernandez and Carmen Gonzalez; sister, Mary Snell; father-in-law, Lynn Boyles; and brothers-in-law, Michael Wernett and Robert Snell.
