John J. Lacey Sr., 85, passed away Friday, Aug. 19, 2022, at Hospice of Mercy in Hiawatha, with his family by his side.

A scripture service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., in Vinton, followed by visitation until 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vinton, with the Rev. Jim Brokman as Celebrant. Military rites will follow the Mass at the church. Interment will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Boone at 3 p.m. Friday.

John was born on March 7, 1937, to Michael and Mary (Hartman) Lacey in Boone, Iowa. He graduated from Boone Sacred Heart High School in 1955 and served his Country in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 through 1962. Following his discharge, John Attended Iowa State University and received a degree in electrical technology. He was united in marriage to Linda K. Fleming on Aug. 26, 1967, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boone.

The couple moved to Vinton in 1976, where John farmed and worked as a substation engineer for Iowa Electric, later Alliant Energy for 23 years.

John and Linda were devoted members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and John was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He truly loved the farm and enjoyed gardening. Spending time with Linda, his children and especially his grandchildren was his greatest joy. After retiring, John loved to take care of the farm and enjoyed helping his neighbors any way he could.

Survivors include his children, John (Trisha) Lacey Jr. of Altoona, Christopher (Janet) Lacey of Vinton and Mary (Monte) Guyer of Clermont; 14 grandchildren, Patrick and Alex Thomsen, Keith and Adelle Henkle, Brogan and Declan Lacey, Quinn and Ian Marron, Wesley and Ella Lacey, Mitchell (Jennifer) Guyer, Dustin (Samantha Lee) Guyer, Casey and Tanner Guyer; four great-grandchildren, Makayla, Harper, Brooklynn and Dominic Guyer; two sisters, Joanna (Jerry) Manriquez of San Jacinto, Calif., and Patty (Loren) Frazier of Council Bluffs; brother, Jim Lacey of Boone; and two sisters-in-law, Karen Lacey of Georgia, and Karon Lacey of Ankeny.

He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Linda, in 2003; three great-grandchildren, Braeden James, Summer Rose and Adaline Paige Guyer; and two brothers, Tom Lacey and Mike Lacey.
