John Gardner Saint, M.D.

John Gardner Saint, M.D., 68, of Springfield, passed away on Monday, February 22, 2021.  He was born September 7, 1952 in Erie, PA, to William and Barbara Booth Saint, who precede him in death.  He married Cristy J. Ayala Saint on September 17, 2016 and she survives.

Also surviving are youngest son, Marty Romero Saint of Springfield; two adult sons, Andrew (Serena) Saint of Park Ridge, IL, and Nathaniel (Kate Doyle) Saint of Springfield; two grandchildren, Serenity and London Saint; one sister, Virginia Stevens of Mentor, OH; one brother, William Saint (Sara Parker) of Fairfax, VA; and three nephews.

John graduated from Fairview High School in 1971, following a year abroad as a Rotary International exchange student in Mexico. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1976 with a major in chemistry, following a conscientious objector alternative service, as an emergency medical technician in Chicago. He then attended medical school at Washington University in St. Louis, graduating in 1980 and specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  John completed a residency at Barnes Jewish Hospital of St. Louis in 1984.  Dr. Saint then relocated to Springfield, IL, where he practiced his profession for over 40 years, delivering hundreds of babies at the city’s two main hospitals. Throughout his career, John was highly rated by his patients as a caring and compassionate physician.

John was a former member of Cherry Hills Baptist Church and more recently joined the Central Baptist Church.  He served on the Mission Committee and participated in various international mission trips to El Salvador, Ghana and Costa Rica.

He found great joy in photography, specifically flowers and nature.  He enjoyed reading and learning, one of his favorite topics being the Civil War.  Through his love of nature, camping came easily to him.  His family time was very important to him, especially road trips together.

Memorial Service: 11 AM, Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at Southwind Park (Hope Institute Pavilion), 4965 S. 2nd St., Springfield, IL with Rev. Mary Ellen Sharp officiating.

Memorial Contributions may be made to: American Baptist Churches of the Great Rivers Region or Washington Street Mission in Springfield.
