John Cyril Gavin

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and entrepreneur

John Cyril Gavin, of Iowa City, passed away with family by his side on June 13, 2025 at the age of 81. Born and raised in Ryan, Iowa, John was the only son of Cyril and Elissa (Vifian) Gavin and grew up alongside his beloved sisters Roslyn, Suzanne, and Carol. From a young age, John was known for his loyalty, wit, and genuine care for others—traits that would define his life.

After graduating from St. Patrick’s High School in Ryan, John attended Loras College, where he earned a degree in political science. His years at Loras were among the most formative of his life, forging friendships that lasted a lifetime. He remained deeply connected to the college, later serving on the Loras College Board of Regents from 1989 to 1998, and was honored as a Regent Emeritus in 1999. His legacy at Loras is a testament to his belief in the value of community, faith, and education.

In 1966, John married the love of his life, Charlotte Zalaznik. Together, they built a beautiful family and a lasting partnership grounded in faith, laughter, and unconditional love. They raised six children and were later blessed with 21 grandchildren—his greatest pride and joy.

John loved his friends and cherished the gift of lifelong friendship. He gathered regularly with his morning coffee group at Dan’s Shortstop, played racquetball nearly every day with close friends, made time to attend Loras reunions, and often traveled to visit old college buddies. His example left a lasting impression on those who knew him and taught his family the true meaning of showing up for the people you love.

John’s career began in consulting and sales, but in the later years of his professional life, he found a new calling—as an entrepreneur. In 1997, what began as a hobby turned into Gavin Historical Bricks, a company he founded after discovering the beauty and potential of antique paving bricks. With the help of his sons, John grew the company into one of the national leaders in their space. More than just a business, it was a legacy of creativity, vision, and family collaboration.

John’s commitment to faith and community was evident in his philanthropy. Alongside Charlotte, he was a devoted supporter of Regina Catholic Schools, St. Patrick’s Parish, and Loras College. The Gavins established multiple scholarships to assist students in need, and funded athletic and wellness initiatives.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Charlotte Gavin; his six children—Stephanie and Mike Marchetti of Glen Ellyn, IL, Jeff Gavin of Iowa City, Melissa and Ryan Eckhoff of Iowa City, Jennifer and Dave Boblenz of Iowa City, Patrick and Amanda Gavin of Iowa City, and Michael and Annie Gavin of Iowa City; grandchildren Michael (Miriam), Ethan, Joseph, Mia, Neal, Rachel, Roan, Adam, Will, Cora, Becca, Luke, Grace, Jack, Stella, Scarlett, Olive, Danny, Elsie, Betsy and Archie; and siblings Roslyn (Casey) Glynn, and Suzanne (Bob) Britt. John was preceded in death by his parents, Cyril and Elissa Gavin, and sister Carol Gavin.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30am on Thursday, June 19 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with a Rosary Vigil preceding at 10:00am with a luncheon to follow. Friends may call from 4:00pm – 7:00pm. on Wednesday, June 18 at St. Patrick’s.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: St. Patrick’s Church Iowa City or Loras All Sports Camp.

John Gavin built a life that mattered—and helped others do the same. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the example he lived in the values of faith, family, friendship and charity.
