John Bernard “Barney” Sheehan, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 9, 2024, at Terrace Glen Village in Marion, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Marion, with the Funeral Mass following at 10:30 a.m. The burial will be held after the Mass at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.

John was born on September 27, 1935, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, to George and Mabel (Ryan) Sheehan. He was one of six siblings. He graduated from Grand Forks Central High School and attended the University of North Dakota.

On June 29, 1957, John married the love of his life, Burdella “Burdie” Marien, and they were married for 66 years. Together they had four children: Tim (Rhonda) Sheehan, Tom (Brenda) Sheehan, Cindy Lombardo, and Jim Sheehan. John retired from General Motors/AC Delco after 30+ years of service. John and Burdie enjoyed traveling, especially cruises. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and loved watching his two favorite teams, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. John loved being a father and he also cherished being a grandpa to his eight grandchildren: Jessie Sheehan, Rachel (Aaron) Jarr, Matt Sheehan, Abby (Tyler) Veenstra, Dominick Lombardo, Katie Lombardo, Brady Sheehan, Makenna Sheehan; and great-grandpa to his four great-grandchildren: Kennedy Jarr, Charlotte Jarr, Aiden Veenstra, and Alyssa Veenstra.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dennis Sheehan; sisters, Monica Grinde, Catherine Mortenson, Lorraine Shipley, and Josephine Nesbit; and his grandson, Brady Sheehan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF.

A special thanks to the caring staff at Terrace Glen Village for taking such good care of our Dad the past 3+ years.
