Janis Greer Hubel

Iowa City

Janis Greer Hubel of Iowa City died at Oaknoll residence where she had lived since 2015 with her husband, Kenn. She was born and schooled in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., in May 1935 to Edith and Ira Greer.

Janis (Jan) attended public schools, played French horn and was a member of the cheerleaders. She studied nursing at Syracuse University where she met her future husband, who was a resident in medicine. They married in 1957 and moved to Silver Spring, Md., where Kenn had a fellowship in physiology and Jan was busy raising Wendy and Nancy.

Kenn joined the faculty of the Dept. of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa in 1962, where they happily raised their two daughters and a son, Adam, born in 1964. They bought a fine old house on N. Linn St, restored it to a single family home and helped prevent the deterioration of the area by helping form the Northside Neighbors Association.

Jan was an avid swimmer and biker. Biking exploits included Scotland and England, New Zealand, France, and Greece. She enjoyed being a seamstress, making fine clothing for her family and many friends. Her knitting needles also produced many items for her children and grandchildren. Master’s swimming was a passion, competing in many events and making lifelong friends. Her three children and their mates remain close.

A gathering for family and friends to share their memories and support will be held Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
