James E. Dirst

James E. Dirst, age 83 of Yorkville, IL passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, January 17, 2021. He was born on March 4, 1937 in Morris, IL the son of Paul and Ella (Knudson) Dirst.

James was united in marriage on April 7, 1962 at the Helmar Lutheran Church in Helmar, IL to Sandra Devick and they spent the next 47 years happily together until her passing on November 3, 2009. He was a longtime member of the Yorkville Congregational United Church of Christ in Yorkville, IL. Jim had served his country proudly as a member of the United States Army from 1955-1957 and active reserve from 1957-1959. Mr. Dirst worked for many years as a Mortgage Loan Banker at Home Savings & Loan in Aurora, and later as Vice President at National City Bank (now PNC) until his retirement. In retirement Jim traveled with his wife Sandra and daughter Tara, while also continuing to volunteer with the Open Door Rehabilitation Center (www.odrc.org), a not-for-profit organization serving adults with developmental disabilities. James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

James is survived by his son, Eric (Karen) Dirst of Woodridge, IL and their children (his grandchildren) Bryan, Daniel, and Benjamin Dirst; his son-in-law, Kevin Sommerfield and daughter (his grandchild) Kiera Sommerfield of DeKalb, IL; his sister Carol Dauwalder of Plainfield, IL; his sisters-in-law, Loretta Dirst of Morton, IL and Liz Dirst of South Bend, IN; and also many, many nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Ella Dirst; his wife, Sandra Dirst; his two daughters, Tara Dirst and Lara Dirst; and his six brothers, Don, Charles, Joe, Dale, Ray and Paul Dirst.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 22, 2021 at the Nelson Funeral Home, 1617 North Bridge Street, Yorkville, IL with Pastor Timothy C. Rhodes, officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the Aux Sable Cemetery in Minooka, IL.

Friends may visit from 4:00 until 8:00 PM on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at the Nelson Funeral Home in Yorkville, IL.
