J. David Roberts, III, 76, of Springfield, died Thursday, April 1, 2021, at his home in Springfield surrounded by family.
He was born July 21, 1944, in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Jesse D. Jr., and Florine Rudd Roberts. He married Kathryn Jean Sisson on August 14, 1965, in Kahoka, Missouri.
Mr. Roberts attended Quincy Senior High School, William Jewell College and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Economics from Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri.
Mr. Roberts was a U. S. Navy Reserve Vietnam Veteran, serving on active duty from 1966 to 1968 in Keflavik, Iceland on the Admiral’s Staff. He served as senior enlisted man in charge of the Operations Division of the NATO-based Iceland Defense Force Joint Command. He worked 33 years as a State of Illinois employee and retired on January 1, 2001, from the Illinois Department on Aging as Assistant to the Director. He began his state career as a Caseworker I at the Adams County Department of Public Aid in Quincy.
He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Springfield, Illinois. He has served his church as Moderator and has chaired many of the church committees.
Mr. Roberts was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha, EN389, and the Quincy Order of DeMolay.
Survivors: Two sons, Nathaniel David (wife Melinda) of Ogden, IL, and Brandon Michael (fiancée Jennifer Boyd); one daughter, Natalie Diane Hudgens of Springfield; 2 granddaughters Corynne Roberts and Ava Hudgens; brother, John David Roberts; and several nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service with military rights will be held at Camp Butler Cemetery.
Staab Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat For Humanity.
