Irene Behrends, 97, died Sunday, August 10, 2025, at Linn Manor Care Center, Marion, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 Friday morning, August 15, 2025, at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, where friends may call after 9:00 a.m. Friday. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Pastor David Raemisch will officiate at the services.
Surviving are 3 children, Sharon Mettler, Steve (Diane) Behrends, Jan Behrens, a daughter-in-law, Barb Behrends, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson and another on the way, her siblings, Donna Jones, John (Marge) Hasler. She was preceded by her parents, her husband, a son Galen, 2 sons-in-law Richard Mettler and Tom Behrens, a sister Pat (Ed) Lubben, and in-laws, John Jones, Ruth (Junior) Edwards.
Irene Margaret Hasler was born November 10, 1927, at Monticello, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Ethel Chapman, Hasler. She attended the rural schools near her home. Irene married Henry Behrends on September 24, 1944, at S.S. Peter and Paul Lutheran Parsonage, rural Monticello. The couple farmed on the Behrends family farm until 1951 when they purchased a farm in Castle Grove Township. They retired from farming in 1982 and moved to Monticello. Irene then worked at the Monticello Community Schools hot lunch program.
Irene was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church where she belonged to the Sewing and Quilting Circles. She crocheted afghans for all her grandchildren. Irene always enjoyed the weekly domino game with her brothers and sisters.
