Helen E. Smith

Helen E. Smith, 95, of Springfield, passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital. She was born on October 10, 1925, in Springfield, the daughter of Howard E. and Clara Nierhoff Harrell, Sr. She married Edward W. “Buck” Smith on October 2, 1944 and he preceded her in death on December 15, 1993. Helen is also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Larry D. Smith and two brothers, Howard E. Harrell, Jr. and William B. Harrell.

Survivors include one son, Ronald E. (Lin) Smith of Springfield; three grandchildren, Ronnie Smith, Andrea McCubbin, and Kimberly O’Connor; three great-grandchildren, Blake (Tricia) O’Connor, Carson McCubbin and Kingston McCubbin; one great-great granddaughter, Sloane O’Connor, and several nieces and cousins.

Helen was a lifelong resident of Springfield and was a homemaker.

Visitation: 9:30 – 10:30 am, Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Funeral Service: 10:30 am, Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with Rev. Dr. John Shear officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Hospice.
