Harold Lee McCarty

Harold Lee McCarty 81, of Rochester, died at 9:00 pm, Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at his home. He was born March 21, 1939 in Springfield, IL to Charles and Bernadine (Kolar) McCarty. Harold cared deeply and looked up to his step-mother, Wanda McCarty who was instrumental in Harold’s upbringing.

Harold is survived by his wife, Marcia, of Springfield; one daughter, Stephanie (Scott) Mundy of Waterloo, IL; one son, Kyle McCarty of Springfield, and two grandchildren, Zachary and Addison Hanusek.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Wanda McCarty; brother, Raymond McCarty; grandson, Mackenzy S. Mundy and his father and mother-in-law, Harold and Lois Cray.

Harold was a US Air Force Veteran serving during the Vietnam War.

Harold was a lifelong resident of Springfield and graduated from Springfield High School in 1957. He retired from the State of Illinois Dept. of Revenue after almost 40 years of service. He loved bowling and even bowled five nights a week in different leagues for a time. He enjoyed sports and was an Illini and St. Louis Cardinals Fan. It was important to Harold to attend as many of his grandchildren’s sporting events as possible. He was also an avid mystery reader.

Private visitation and funeral will be held at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield.

Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.

CDC Protocol shall be followed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or St. John’s Hospice.
