Harold Bassett

Denver, Colo.

On Nov. 26, 2022, Harold Bassett, Denver Colo., entered into eternal rest due to natural causes. He was a devoted father, brother and family man. Harold was born July 11, 1949, in Davenport, Iowa, and graduated from Washington High School, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1968. He earned his master’s degree from Drake University and undergraduate degree from Iowa State University. Harold was an outstanding football player. He was an all-conference defensive end at Iowa State University under Johnny Majors, and became a Hall of Fame inductee at Ellsworth Community College. He was recruited by the legendary Bear Bryant at Alabama. Harold dedicated his life to coaching football (at Ellsworth, Drake, UNI, University of Colorado as well as other high schools in Texas). Over his 40 year coaching career, and in business, he really enjoyed working with and developing young men.

Harold was the oldest son of eight children and was preceded in death by his father, the Honorable Bishop Hurley Bassett Sr.; his mother, Charlotte Marie Bassett; and sister, Dr. Patricia Ann Bassett.

He will be deeply missed by his three daughters, Claire Irvan of Portland, Ore., Kari Engesser, Des Moines, and Ashly Bassett, Longview, Texas; six grandchildren; also his four brothers, Pastor Hurley Bassett, New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ, Sy Bassett, James Bassett, Roland Bassett; and sisters, Lovie Bassett and Dr. Carolyn Rucker.

Private services will be at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home, 11150 E. Dartmouth Ave., Aurora, CO 80014. (303) 745-4418. Pastor Hurley Bassett Jr. officiating.
