Gerald J. “Jerry” Maiers, 90 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2022, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence. He was born on May 29, 1932, in Luxemburg, Iowa, the son of Alphonse and Amelia (Helle) Maiers. He attended the Delaware County (near Colesburg) country school. On Oct. 13, 1962, he and the former Rita Rose Werner were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lamont, Iowa.

Jerry worked for area farmers and was a truck driver. In 1961, he bought his own trucks which he operated for 20 years. He hauled livestock for Dubuque Packing Co, and later, for Edgewood Oil and Edgewood Feed Mill.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, yard and garden work, and wintering for 11 years in Florida.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rita; two sons, Doug (Shelley) Maiers of Clarksville, Iowa, and David (Tina) Maiers of North Liberty, Iowa; two daughters, Sharon (John) Coulter of Des Moines, Iowa, and Janet (Mitch) Rucker of Urbana, Iowa; and nine grandchildren, Jared, Tayler, and Jadyn Maiers, Andrew and Alex Coulter, Kara and Matthew Maiers, and Aleeah and Abbey Rucker. He is also survived by one brother, Wilfred (Maxine) Maiers of Des Moines, Iowa; two sisters, Marie Pasker of Edgewood, Iowa, and Dianne (Tom) Scherbring of Dyersville, Iowa; and one brother-in-law, Dean Tucker of Strawberry Point, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Thelma and George Burkle, Irma and Ernie Kelchen, Virginia and Don Lee and Grace Tucker; and one brother-in-law, Jim Pasker.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2022, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hazleton, Iowa. Online condolences may be left at www.white-mthope.com. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements.
