Frances Smith Carver

 

Frances Smith Carver, age 98, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, passed away on the night of Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at Four Seasons Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, North Carolina. She was born in Mountain Home, North Carolina on October 18, 1923 to the late Ernest Joy Smith and Celeste Sergeant Smith.

 

She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Jim Ray Carver; a brother, Bill Smith of Asheville; and a sister, Joyce Johnson of Wilmington, Delaware.

 

Frances is survived by her son, David Carver and his wife, Beth of Hendersonville; her daughter, Becky Staton and her husband, Lonnie of LaGrange, North Carolina. “Gammie” is also survived by her six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild,

all of whom she diligently followed on Facebook in her later years.

 

A graduate of Hendersonville High School, Class of 1940, Frances was a homemaker and a secretary, last working for Alton Box Board at the Mountain Home Industrial Park. Her great- great-great grandfather, Hugh Gorely, settled in what is now Henderson County in the 1790’s, farming a tract of land on the banks of Mud Creek at North Rugby Road. Her grandfather, Lee Roy Smith, moved the family to Mountain Home around 1910, where she was

born and lived her entire life.

 

Frances was an active member of the Mountain Home Independent Baptist Church where she was the organist for many years. Frances’s physical heart may have worn out, but her loving heart for family and friends will be long remembered.

 

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in the Kirby Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Bray officiating.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home.  Interment will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest next to her late husband, Jim.
