Floraine “Rene” Beltz was born Nov. 10, 1934, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Vincent and Lucinda (Smith) Beltz. She attended Iowa City schools, graduating from City High School. She later enrolled at Kirkwood Community College, graduating with the first class in the Registered Nursing Program. She also attended the University of Iowa. For over 27 years she worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital, most of those years as an operating room nurse. While at the VA, she was involved with teaching nursing students, and was also a lecturer and published author in her field. Even after retiring, she often shared her knowledge and love of nursing. She remained connected to her nursing profession with memberships in both state and national nursing organizations.

On June 2, 1953, she married her sweetheart, Olin L. Lloyd “Tex.” The couple enjoyed so much in their lives, but most important to them both was their family. There were no limits to their love, devotion and generosity to their family and friends. In later years the couple spent winters in Arizona, Texas and Arkansas, making new friendships that would last a lifetime.

She enjoyed gardening and nature’s beauty, especially birds and fishing. She was a great cook and known for her rhubarb custard and raspberry cream cheese pies, as well as ranger cookies. In her later years she enjoyed spoiling her pets.

In 2021, Rene joined the Catholic Church, something that she had felt drawn to for many years. She attended mass in the chapel at Atrium Village as she was able, and enjoyed Fr. Hai’s daily visits.
