Elfriede (Markmann) Hansen
Cedar Rapids
Elfriede (Markmann) Hansen died Jan. 18, 2024, in Cedar Rapids. Elfriede was born Nov. 29, 1936, in Anamosa, Iowa, the daughter of Marie and Henry Markmann. She grew up on a farm near Hale, Iowa and graduated from Olin High School. After high school, she moved to the big city of Cedar Rapids, where she worked at Woolworth’s and then at Collins. She married Pete Hansen on May 27, 1960, in Wyoming, Iowa and they remained married until Pete’s death in 2018. Pete and Elfriede were longtime members of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church.
Elfriede’s greatest pride was her family, including sons Scott (Sarah) and Mike (Patrick Carlin), and grandsons, Evan, and Miles. She loved hearing about their jobs, school, sports, and trips. Elfriede was the hardest worker most people knew. She spent 40+ years at St. Luke’s Hospital working in patient registration.
Friede was the consummate gift giver, and nothing gave her more pleasure than giving presents. She loved shopping and took great pride in snagging a bargain at Kohl’s or Von Maur. She beamed when she saw her boys or grandkids. She was an expert Wheel of Fortune player and never missed watching Iowa men’s or women’s basketball games. She read the Gazette newspaper with a fine tooth comb every day and discussed politics and current events until the very last few days of her life. She will be greatly missed by friends and family.
Funeral services will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 11:00 am. There will be a visitation prior from 9:00-11:00 am. Inurnment will take place at a later time.
