Edward Richard “Rick” Allan III, 79, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully in his sleep at home after a battle with cancer. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Monarch Room at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. Military rites will be held at 3 p.m. at the beginning of the celebration.

Rick is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Jo; three sons, Chris (Jess) Allan of Dyersville, and Greg (Staci) Allan and Rob (Breanna) Allan, both of Cedar Rapids; 5 grandchildren, Lucas, Carter, Mallory, McKinley, and Hayden; in-laws, Bill (Mary) Ruddy, Ann Slowinski, Margaret Ruddy, and Cathy Pretz; step-sister, Karen Koscinski; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; baby sister, Nancy Sue Allan; step-mother, Marilyn Allan; brother-in-law, Joe Ruddy; and step-brother-in-law, Norm Koscinski.

Rick was born on February 14, 1945, in Baltimore, MD, the son of Edward and Maryland House Allan II. He was a Navy veteran, proudly serving in Puerto Rico during the Vietnam War, and a graduate from the University of Iowa. On July 11, 1977, Rick married Mary Jo Ruddy in Clinton. He was a carpenter at the University of Iowa, retiring in 2010. Rick also graduated from the Scott Community College Solar program, and following built a passive solar home in Western, IA for his family, where they lived for 42 years.

Rick enjoyed reading, tinkering, and traveling. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed watching sports on television. Rick also liked to garden and bake, especially delicious pies and cookies. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and his presence will be deeply missed by those who were fortunate enough to know him.
