Pigeon Falls, Wis.

Edna Marie Turnipseed, age 89, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024 with her family by her side at the Pigeon Falls Health Care Center in Pigeon Falls.

Edna was born on February 15, 1935 in Cedar Rapids, IA to Filbert and Helen (Pospisil) Vondracek. Growing up she enjoyed gardening with her mother, spending time with Grandma Pospisil and especially morel mushrooming in the spring on her uncle’s farm with family.

She met her future husband, Wendall, through a double date with her brother, Alvin. They married July 22, 1954 and settled in Swisher, IA. Wendall worked for the family feed, lumber and fertilizer business and Edna was a home maker. They were married for 68 years and had one daughter, Michele.

It was during the annual vacations to Birchwood that they fell in love with the scenic Wisconsin countryside. After several years of searching for the right farm, they moved to the Blair area in 1980 and raised grain crops and Hereford Agnus cattle. Edna helped with calving and vaccinating the cattle and did the bookwork for the farm and mineral business. She would bake dozens of cookies at Christmas time and give them to Wendall’s customers.

Edna enjoyed traveling to antique shows, shops and auctions with her daughter. She had the foresight to collect something before it became popular and expensive and had great fun doing it. At home, she loved to be outside in her perennial flower gardens and being with her Sheltie dogs. During winter months she would make braided wool rugs, feather trees, various types of needle work and crochet. Her hands were always busy.

In 2000 they retired, sold the farm and built a new home north of Pigeon Falls. Edna enjoyed sitting on the back porch overlooking her large flower garden and the scenic valley behind the house, while Wendall mowed lawn.

Edna is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Robert Henrickson of Hixton; nephew and nieces, Craig (Karen) Vondracek, Connie (Dave) Dvorak and Cherie (Doug) Johnson in Iowa and special family friend, Marci (John) Walker of Wisconsin Dells and Sheltie dog, Sarah.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wendall; brother, Alvin and sisters-in-law, Doris and RoseAnn Vondracek.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall with Pastor Dale Moe officiating. Burial will be in the Sechlerville Cemetery in rural Hixton.
