Douglas Kevin Allaire, 75, of Iowa City/Coralville, died Thursday, May 30, 2024 at The Birdhouse surrounded by his family after living several years with Parkinson’s, Dementia, and Merkel Cell Carcinoma. Visitation will be held from 4-6 PM, Friday, June 14, 2024 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, with a rosary to start at 3:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, June 15, 2024 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Birdhouse; Hospice Home of Johnson County or The Coralville Food Pantry.

Doug was born on October 21, 1948 in Mt. Kisco, NY, the son of James and Virginia (McCann) Allaire. He met his future wife at Notre Dame while she was studying at St. Mary’s in South Bend, IN. They were married on January 31, 1970 in Terre Haute, IN. They moved to California for a few years and then moved to Iowa in 1974 where he completed his MFA in Ceramics and Multi-Media and stayed on at The University of Iowa working at the College of Journalism and Mass Communication and the College of Education until his retirement in 2010. Over the years countless students came to him for advice as he was a force at the University.

Doug was an avid reader, philosopher, traveler, Hawkeye sports and Cubs fan. He was a collector of model airplanes, trains, and guitars. Doug was an artist and musician who loved playing guitar. He had an eclectic taste in music and a love for the Grateful Dead. Doug will be remembered for his sense of humor and wry wit.

Doug is survived by his wife, Ann of Iowa City/Coralville; two daughters, Jenny (Steve) Cooper of Cedar Rapids, IA; and Emily (Jason Gomes) Allaire of Cedar Falls, IA; nine grandchildren, Grace, Ethan and Sam Cooper, and Jordan Gomes, Allie Taiber, Olivia Gomes, Gil Taiber (deceased May 30, 2019), Egan Taiber and Iris Gomes; three siblings, James (Cheryl) Allaire of St. Cloud, MN, Virginia (David) Beals of Columbus, OH, and Neil (Lois Vanderkooi) Allaire of Broomfield, CO; and extended family.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, and Emily’s son, Gil.
