Dorothy M. Pool of West Ridge Care Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at the age of 91 from natural causes. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 24, 2023, at St. Mark’s Methodist Church, 4700 Johnson Ave. NW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Bonnie Koeppen officiating. Interment will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday, July 23, 2023, from 2 to 5 p.m. Visitation will also be available one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Debra Rettenmeier (Dale) of Hiawatha, Iowa; son, Ron Pool (Heidi) of Ames, Iowa; four grandchildren, Luke Pettipoole (Megan) of Omaha, Neb., Benjamin (Cara) Pool of Denver, Colo., Ryan (Rachel) Pool of Austin, Texas, and Jordan Pool of Ames, Iowa; as well as five great-grandchildren, Beatrix Pettipoole, Xanthe Pettipoole, Elijah Pool, Weston Pool and Sawyer Pool.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her two granddaughters, Staci and Amy Rettenmeier; her parents, Jesse and Ann Lorts; brother, Jesse M. Lorts; and sister-in-law, Rosemary Lorts.

She was baptized when she was young and was a faithful follower of Christ throughout her lifetime.

Dorothy was born in St. James, Mo. on December 2, 1931. After graduating from high school there, she worked as a secretary. She married Robert H. Pool on June 12, 1955. They moved to Marion, Iowa, in 1958 where Robert was employed by Collins Avionics for 33 years.

Dorothy was a homemaker during those early years of marriage while her children were young. In 1973, she entered the work force once again. Over the years she was employed by Linn Coop Oil Company, Nash Finch and Aegon. Just prior to her retirement in 1991, she worked as a teacher’s associate at Bowman Woods Elementary School in the Linn-Mar School District where she was employed for 16 years.

Dorothy was an excellent cook and always enjoyed cooking large meals for family gatherings, with a particular love of baking. She and Robert enjoyed traveling within the continental United States as well as trips to Hawaii, Europe, and Australia. They both enjoyed square dancing, and both volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital after retiring as well.

Dorothy and Robert lived in Marion, Iowa, most of their married life. They moved to The Meth-wick Retirement Community in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 2006. In 2022, Dorothy moved to West Ridge Care Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Dorothy was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family was very special to her. She lived life to the fullest and enjoyed sharing her time and talent with others. She had a positive attitude in life and always tried to spread joy along the way. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

In Lieu of flowers, a memorial may be directed to St. Mark’s Methodist Church.
