Doris D. Henderson

Anamosa

Doris Henderson, 99, passed away January 4, 2024 after complications of a fall. Her family takes comfort that her spirit is now free of pain and sorrow. She joins her husband and many loved ones in heaven after being God’s good and faithful servant here on earth.

Visitation will be 5:00 – 8-00 Thursday evening, January 11 and 9:30 Friday morning, Jan. 12 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Anamosa, Iowa. The Funeral Service of Resurrection will be at 10:30 at the church presided by Pastor Rodney Bluml. A luncheon will follow.

Doris was born March 21, 1924 in Central City, Iowa, daughter of Lillie and Jesse Price. She graduated from Central City High School. She married Kenneth Henderson November 19, 1941. She and Kenneth farmed their land together in Cass township, Anamosa, Iowa until they “moved into town” in 1980.

Doris was active in church activities such as the quilting group, gardening, reading, in between being a faithful farm wife and all that entails. She enjoyed learning new skills such as swimming, cake decorating, knitting, and quilting. She and Kenny had fun dancing at Prairie Moon Ballroom, playing in card clubs, and taking bus trips to explore the United States. Family get togethers were very important to Doris as she was close to her siblings and her own large family of children and grands.

Doris felt it was very important to stay physically fit. She followed a diabetic diet to a “t” and exercised regularly. In fact, she led an exercise group for seniors for many years, until at age 90 she decided to give up leadership and “just” be a participant. That continued until Covid ended the class in 2020. She sorely missed it even though she was 95 years old by then.

Doris is survived by her children Alan Henderson, Gary Henderson, Gail (Dan) Husmann, L.D. (Georgia) Henderson, Lori (Mike) Norton and Beth (Mark) Thomas. Grandchildren are Jason (Kim) Henderson, Jessica Gudinas, Jill Settles, Chad (Melissa) Henderson, Eric (Alicia) Henderson, Abby Engelken, Amy (Pat) Bartels, Ben (Allison) Husmann, Brandi (Jake) Colehour, Heather (Mike) Westphal, Jenny Whitman, Breann (Eric) Brock, Sara (Jim) Bauer, Amber Dirks, Derek (Alicia) Thomas, and Dylan (Megan) Thomas. In addition, 53 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, several dozen nieces and nephews as well as friends survive her. We will follow many of the traditions she established for her family.

Doris was predeceased by her husband in 2014, her parents, siblings, and their spouses: Alice (Ralph) Akers, Leora (Art) Welty, Bill (Bessie) Price, Fern (Ed) Anderson, Wilma (Jerry) Akers, Kenneth (Nyline) Price, Edith (Floyd) Covington, Marion (Betty) Price, in-laws Dale (Ann) Henderson, Dorothy (Bob) Whiting, Richard Henderson, son-in-law Leon Dirks, and grandsons Mason Bauer and Nick Wheeler.

Family would like to thank the staff at Woodland Park Assisted Living for their loving and excellent care the past 18 months as well as the good care provided by Dr. Vernon.

Memorials can be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, Anamosa, IA.
