Darrel Martin
Cedar Rapids
Darrel Martin, 90, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Wednesday June 21, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospice in Cedar Rapids, with his family by his side. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 26, at Christ Church Presbyterian in Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Dr. Carl Anderson officiating. A luncheon will follow and burial will follow that at the Clarence Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until service time.
Darrel was born on May 16, 1933, to Sterling Price and Susan Matilda (Hay) Martin in Columbia, Mo. He married Bonita Schilling on July 3, 1959, at the Clarence Methodist Church.
Darrel graduated from Stanwood High School, served his country in the Navy for four years, and graduated from Coe College in 1976. He started his own real estate company, Martin & Co., in 1963 and was in the real estate and appraisal business for over 40 years. Darrel was a member of the American Legion and a faithful church member. He enjoyed putting puzzles together with his wife Bonnie, and they also wintered in Orange Beach, Ala., for 15 years. Darrel had many interests, including playing cards, fishing, bicycling, jogging, gardening, knitting and playing guitar. He enjoyed driving his 1931 Chevy in the Atkins parades and was a big Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He loved his family and attending his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s events. He was a man of great humor and a light heart, who carried punch lines in his wallet to help him remember jokes.
Darrel is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Bonnie; children, Mickey (Jerry) Akers, Mike (Ann) Martin, Robin Martin and Dan (Kelley) Martin; grandchildren, Sam (Phil) Reges, Holli Martin, Shelly (Jeff) Dorman, Abby (Alex) Christenson, Megan (Alex) Westemeier, Alexa Martin and Gage Martin; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Harold P. Martin.
Memorials may be directed to Christ Church Presbyterian, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospice, or the Meth-Wick Community.
