Christine Ann “Chris” Herndon, 78, of Springfield, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 26, 2020 at Memorial Medical Center. She was born on October 3, 1942 in Springfield, IL to Jack and Edna (Kamp) Janssen. She married William H. “Bill” Herndon on October 5, 1963.
Chris is survived by her husband, William H. “Bill” of Springfield; one daughter, Susan Elaine (Robert) Griffin of Springfield; two sons, William H. (Sarah Sever) Herndon, Jr. of St. Louis, MO, and John Archer Herndon of West Milton, OH; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Judy (Wayne) Etling of Springfield; one brother, John Janssen of South Carolina, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Chris had been a resident of Springfield all her life and graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1960. She retired from St. Joseph School after being the librarian there for close to 30 years. She was also an active member of St. Joseph Parish in Springfield and volunteered as a Samaritan at St. John’s Hospital.
Chris or “Chrissy”, as Bill called her, enjoyed reading and loved visiting the library. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Visitation: 10:30-11:30 am, Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at St. Joseph Church-Springfield.
Funeral Mass: 11:30 am, Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at St. Joseph Church- Springfield with Reverend Manuel P. Cuizon officiating.
Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
CDC Protocol shall be followed. Face coverings are required and capacity will be limited.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
