He was born on April 13, 1942, in Manchester, the son of Edward and Lorrayne (Bloom) Lane. The family lived in Winthrop in his early childhood, then was educated in Davenport and Cedar Rapids, graduating from Washington High School in 1960. Charles then entered the United States Marine Corps. He became a Christian while in boot camp in San Diego, California. Charles was stationed in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu. He served in the Readiness Unit that would in a moments notice board Naval ships where they would be sent to Okinawa, Philippines, Japan and China.

Returning to Iowa, he married the love of his life, Judith Seeks on April 28, 1963, at St. John’s Methodist Church in Davenport. His last assignment was Quantico, Virginia, where he was honorably discharged in 1964. Charles and Judy returned to Manchester to farm, and he also was employed as a machinist at Cherry Burrell (now Cedar Rapids International Paper) retiring in 2000.
