Charles “Chuck” DeShaw, 67, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Friday, March 3, 2023, at his home following an extended illness.
Visitation will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, March 10, at St. Luke Catholic Church, Hopkinton. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. with Fr. Paul Baldwin officiating. A private family interment will take place in the Hopkinton Cemetery. Goettsch Funeral Home has taken Chuck and his family into their care. Chuck is survived by his children. Jessica (Gary) Bell, Kara (Tom) Howe and Allen DeShaw; his grandchildren. Lila, Adelaide, Connor, Declan and Emerson; his siblings, Doug (Barb) DeShaw, Charlene (Scott) Smith and Carrie (Rick) Wolfe; and his beloved “guard dog” Stitches.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Camp Wapsi Y to celebrate his love for the outdoors.
Chuck was born to Duane Jr. and Luella Weber DeShaw on March 29, 1955, in Monticello, Iowa. He graduated from Maquoketa Valley School where he said “all the smart people went to school.” He was a very talented carpenter that built many houses including his parent’s home in Hopkinton and an elaborate Barbie doll house for his daughters (and later granddaughters) with an oak spindle staircase and electricity. He taught his son Allen everything he knew to carry on his carpentry legacy. Chuck lived an adventurous life, with multiple near-death experiences. He loved loud music, playing pranks, playing pool and enjoying life, canoeing on the Wapsi River.
